The Memphis Teacher Residency (MTR) seeks to positively impact student achievement in Memphis’ urban schools by recruiting, training, and supporting outstanding teachers, all within a Christian context.
The MTR offers aspiring urban teachers a four-year training process designed to produce professional and highly effective classroom leaders. The training begins during an intensive 12-month residency in which the Resident earns a Masters of Urban Education (MUE) from Union University and completes an entire internship year under the leadership of a mentor teacher. Additionally, MTR coaches observe Residents and provide feedback on a weekly basis. During this year, Residents receive a small stipend, housing allowance and full tuition assistance. In return, Residents commit to teaching for three consecutive years immediately following the residency year in a Memphis urban school. The MTR seeks to group Residents and graduates in clusters within strategic host schools. It is vital to the effectiveness of our mission that the MTR has the capacity to place participants en masse within long-term k-12 feeder-pattern school partners. During this three year post-residency commitment, the MTR provides ongoing coaching and professional development to each graduate.
The MTR is looking for high-capacity leaders who demonstrate a sincere passion for leading urban students and who possess the character and humility necessary for success. We invite both elementary and secondary teachers from both education and non-education majors. Application is limited to graduates of a four-year college with a cumulative gpa of 2.75, or better.
