Our Schools

Memphis City Schools is the largest school system in Tennessee, educating 118,000 students in 191 schools citywide including 108 elementary, 25 middle, four junior high, 31 high schools, six career and technology centers, seven special schools, and 10 charter schools.

MCS schools are rated as some of the best in the state and nation, including White Station High (Forbes magazine’s Top 20 and Newsweek’s 2005 list of the Best High Schools in America), Delano and Keystone Elementary Schools (U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon Schools) and John P. Freeman (one of 12 schools honored by the American Board of Teacher Excellence).

All Memphis City Schools are accredited through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, excluding charter schools.

Memphis City Schools is committed to using technology in the classroom, and all MCS classrooms are Internet-wired to handle at least five computers.

Memphis City Schools offers optional programs at 31 elementary, middle/junior and senior high schools. Optional programs include college preparatory, aviation, travel, tourism, health sciences, banking/finance, international studies and creative and performing arts.

English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) programs operate in 47 elementary, 13 middle and 11 high schools and serve more than 4,200 students from a variety of nationalities and 69 languages. MCS offers early childhood education programs in 71 schools.

More than 650 business and community partners donate their time and money through the Adopt-A-School program.
